The Machine Stops
This is one of my favorite short stories of all time. Written by E.M. Forster. Especially interesting when you consider that it was first published in 1909 in the Cambridge Review. Not sure if this is public domain, but it is published in its entirety in several places on the internet. (c) 1947 E.M. Forster. You could argue this is in the same spirit as Neuromancer...just 80 years earlier. The world was undergoing similar change and experiencing a new Culture of Time and Space.
