The Underselling of RFID AMR's Bruce Richardson and co. presented a broad overview of RFID, and the potential market opportunity in an AMR webcast today titled "The Underselling of RFID". AMR labeled the technology impact and opportunity for investment as "bigger than Y2K". We couldn't agree more!
With RFID chips getting down to the .10-.15 cent range it is now feasable to start tracking case packs and some retail items with "passive" tags, while the "active" tags are appropriate for tracking larger more expensive assets.
The Ambient Informatics take on this is that RFID is one key component of a significant transformation in the way enterprise systems are designed and implemented...requiring a focus on coordinating distributed assets and inventory in motion, and in turn, requiring distributed visibility and interaction across people and decisionmakers to effectively manage this adaptive network within the business context...rather than todays centralized command-and-control models.
